Costa Rica has long been on the radar of surfers seeking the perfect blend of spectacular scenery and world-class waves. As a tropical paradise nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica boasts an impressive array of surf spots, catering to all skill levels and individual tastes. But does this Central American jewel truly live up to its reputation when it comes to surfing? Let’s find out.
Variety Considered the Spice of Surf Life
One of the primary reasons Costa Rica is so celebrated among surf enthusiasts is its diverse range of surf breaks. With over 800 miles of coastline, the country offers both reef and beach breaks, as well as points and river mouths – something to suit every preference.
The Pacific Coastline
The majority of Costa Rica’s well-known surf spots are situated along the Pacific coast. Playa Tamarindo, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste, is an excellent spot for beginners and experts alike. Warm, consistent waves break along the shore, against a backdrop of beautiful beaches and lush jungle.
Santa Teresa and Malpais, located on the Nicoya Peninsula, are revered for their powerful waves and scenic tranquility, while the famous surf breaks of Playa Hermosa, south of Jacó, are known for their challenging barreling waves.
The southern Pacific coast is home to Dominical, an explorer’s paradise with plenty of breaks for experienced surfers and beginners alike. With its laid-back vibe and reliable surf, it’s no wonder that the town is quickly gaining notoriety among surf aficionados.

The Caribbean Coastline
On the Caribbean side, surf spots are less abundant, but still very much worth the visit. Puerto Viejo, the surfer’s hotspot on the Caribbean side, is renowned for the iconic “Salsa Brava” – a powerful reef break known as the Caribbean’s heaviest wave.
Consistency: A Surfer’s Dream Come True
Consistent wave conditions offer tremendous appeal to surfers, and Costa Rica boasts just that. With warm waters year-round, surfers can catch waves on either the Pacific or Caribbean coasts at any time of the year. The Pacific coast sees the biggest swells between April and October, while the Caribbean side experiences optimal surf conditions from November to March.
Surf Culture: Pura Vida at Its Finest
There is more to good surfing than mere waves, and Costa Rica’s vibrant surf culture seals the deal. The essence of “Pura Vida,” the ubiquitous local phrase that encapsulates the country’s spirit of living life to the fullest, is intricately woven into the fabric of Costa Rican surf culture. The friendly, easygoing atmosphere among the local and international surf community enhances the overall experience and keeps surfers coming back for more.
A Haven for Eco-conscious Surfers
Costa Rica’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and wildlife has made it a haven for eco-friendly tourism. Surfers can enjoy their time in the water while knowing that the environment is as important to the local community as it is to them. Many surf schools and organizations actively participate in beach clean-ups and marine conservation efforts, further contributing to Costa Rica’s stellar reputation as a surf destination.
Costa Rica indeed has good surfing – actually, it has outstanding surfing. The combination of diverse wave conditions, rich surf culture, and eco-conscious practices create a surf experience like no other. Regardless of skill level or particular wave preferences, surfers will undoubtedly find something to love in Costa Rica. So, pack your surfboard and get ready to ride the waves of your life in this tropical paradise.

Riding a motorcycle is not just about the adrenaline rush, but it’s also about expressing personal style and making a statement. One of the most iconic and practical accessories for motorcycle enthusiasts is the leather motorcycle saddlebag. These bags, which are attached to the sides of the motorcycle, provide convenient storage space for riders, while also adding a touch of classic style to the bike.
A Brief History of Leather Motorcycle Saddlebags
The concept of saddlebags dates back to ancient times when horse riders used them to carry their belongings. In the early 20th century, motorcyclists adopted the idea, creating bags specifically designed for their bikes. Leather quickly became the preferred material for these bags, as it offered durability, weather resistance, and a rugged appeal that resonated with motorcycle culture.
Leather saddlebags have stood the test of time for several reasons. First, the material is known for its toughness and ability to withstand the elements, including rain, sun, and wind. Second, leather is a natural material that ages gracefully, developing a unique patina over time, which many riders find appealing. Finally, leather bags offer a certain level of luxury and craftsmanship that sets them apart from synthetic alternatives.
Functionality and Style
Leather motorcycle saddlebags come in various shapes, sizes, and designs to suit every rider’s needs and preferences. Some bikers prefer minimalist pouches, while others seek out more elaborate, studded designs. Many bags also feature adjustable straps, quick-release buckles, and lockable compartments for added security and convenience.
When it comes to functionality, leather saddlebags deliver. They provide ample storage space for essentials like tools, spare parts, and personal items, making long rides and road trips more comfortable and enjoyable.
Caring for Your Leather Saddlebags
To ensure your leather motorcycle saddlebags remain in good condition, it’s essential to practice proper care and maintenance. Regularly clean your bags with a damp cloth, and avoid using harsh chemicals or soaking the leather. Conditioning the leather every few months with a quality leather conditioner will help maintain its suppleness and prevent cracking.

Maui’s diving spots are numerous, as are the different sorts of dives available. Dives are accessible not just on the island of Maui, but also on the neighboring islands of Lanai and Molokini.
Molokini is well-known for being a one-of-a-kind diving destination. The island is actually a caldera, the top of an ancient crater-head four miles off the shore of Maalaea Harbor on Maui. Its “bowl” is rather shallow and ideal for snorkeling and diving, but its backside is a massive wall that drops straight down through the clear waters into the abyss. This is a must for qualified divers because you will almost certainly never encounter anything like it again. Also, this is an area where some of the larger fish may be seen emerging from the ocean depths.
The island of Lanai, located eight miles off the coast of Maui’s Lahaina Harbor, has one of the state’s largest coral reefs. Many of which are riddled with caverns and caves. One such location is “Cathedrals”, which gets its name from the way the coral formations seem when viewed from below, with light shafts beaming down through the waters above in a cathedral-like pattern. If you are not prepared for diving, you can find a lot of dive shops in Lahaina.
Maui County is made up of several islands: Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and the tiny inlet island of Molokini. These islands are all connected by an underwater mountain that rises from deep beneath the ocean’s surface. The spaces between these islands are formed by shallow canals sculpted by nature over time. If you drew a circle around the entire island cluster and stuck to the outside borders of each island, the area immediately beyond that circle would be deep water, plummeting quickly with abrupt drop-offs to the bottom of the ocean in most cases. The canals between the islands, on the other hand, would be quite shallow, in many places barely deeper than three hundred feet.
Maui, the largest and most popular island, is made up of two massive mountains: Mount Haleakala, which rises 10,000 feet above the ocean, and the West Maui Mountains, which climb nearly half as high. These islands are separated by a huge valley, which gives Maui the moniker “Valley Island.” There are as many climatic zones on an island that only stretches around forty-eight miles from end to end as there are on the entire coastline from Alaska to Costa Rica. This creates a rich atmosphere for the numerous activities accessible on the island of Maui.
O’ahu lies in the middle of the Hawaiian archipelago as the third largest island within the chain. Much of the eastern portion of the island is state forest reserve land and open for public use.
Attractions – O’ahu is 44 miles long and 30 miles across encompassing 594 square miles. The island was formed by two volcanoes, Waianee and Koolau, now extinct. The mountain ranges on the western and eastern sides of the island are named for these volcanoes, respectively. Both ranges are protected by state forest reserve lands. Fifty beaches that line the O’ahu coast are within the state or county beach/park program. Many of these sites contain various facilities the least of which are bathrooms and showers.
This island is split into four regions: the South Shore, Windward Coast, North Shore and Leeward Coast. The South Shore of O’ahu is the most populated and developed region of the entire state. It contains the capital city of Honolulu with a population near 400,000. Waikiki Beach stretches for two miles along the water south of the city, and is the most popular beach on the island. Pearl Harbor lies west of Waikiki and Honolulu. This natural harbor contains the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, the most visited site in the state. North of the capital city is the Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve that protects the highlands and provides access to natural areas along the southeastern coast. Several state parks, beaches and monuments along O’ahu’s southeastern shoreline preserve fascinating and beautiful natural and cultural landmarks.
The Windward Coast of O’ahu lies along the northeastern shore. Like every other island in this archipelago the windward coast receives large amounts of rain. This area on O’ahu is largely rural with private agricultural lands. State highway 83 leads along the scenic coast between the water and the Koolau Mountain Range. Natural areas in this region include Kailua Beach Park, Kualoa Regional Park, Kahana Valley State Park and Malaekahana State Recreation Area.
The North Shore of the island is famous for its beaches that produce large waves for surfing. Winter weather patterns create up to 35 foot waves that make Waimea Bay Beach Park, Ekuhai Beach Park and Sunset Beach Park hotspots for surfers and spectators. Due to the large swells produced on these beaches many have strong under currents that easily overpower swimmers. Swimming is usually best during the summer months on the north shore of O’ahu, when currents aren’t as swift.
The leeward coast of O’ahu or the Waianae Coast is on the west side of Oahu and the least developed region of the island. This area is arid as it lies in the rain shadow of the Waianae Mountain Range. Eight beach parks line the leeward shores of western O’ahu as well as a few small communities. Makaha Beach Park is a favorite with old style surfers and spectators. When the waves are not big enough to surf this is an excellent place to swim.
